What Do New Release & Still Showing Mean?

We list current films on the column to the left of each page for easy navigation of our site. We have divided the list into two sections: "New Releases" and "Still Showing".

"New Releases" identifies films that are about to be released or ones that are in the early phases of their theatrical run. We include a release date below the rating button so you know what is generally available now and what you can look forward to.

"Still Showing" identifies films that still have some box office ticket sales somewhere in their North American Theatre release.

What this means for you, our readers, is that we may often have a film listed in our column to the left before or after it is available at your local theaters. This is likely to be because the film is still playing somewhere in our Internet audience, though not necessarily available for your local viewing pleasure.

If we do not have a film listed, it means we did not review it. We may also indicate a "ltd" (limited) or "gen" (general) release dates. Clicking All Reviews will take you to complete alphabetized list of the films we have reviewed, no matter what the release dates.

And What Do "ltd" and "gen" mean before the dates on New Releases?

For a variety of reasons, distributors may decide to release a film to a limited audience. We indicate a limited release with the letters "ltd". Sometimes, this will be in Los Angeles, New York, or Toronto and sometimes in selected theatres nationwide. When we know in advance that a film will only be in limited release, we let you know. If the distributors has indicated an intention to release a film in general release at a specific later date, we will include that information after "gen". If we just give you the date it indicates the general release date for North America.

At CinemaSense™, we use the release date for the main theatre run in North America. We do not indicate special releases at festivals, nor do we give the release dates for foreign films until they come to Los Angeles where we have a chance to see them. We highly recommend that anyone interested in the details of release dates and other information about films consult IMDb (Internet Movie Data Base) as the premier Internet source for complete movie information, including worldwide release dates for many films.

Clicking All Reviews will take you to complete alphabetized list of the films we have reviewed, no matter what the release dates.

What is our All Reviews Page?

No matter what the history of a theatrical release, we always keep our reviews accessible in a alphabetized list on our All Reviews page. This is useful to assist those who wish to consult our reviews before accessing movies at home either via cable, satellite, purchase, rental, or TV.

We strongly recommend that you bookmark our All Reviews page so you can go straight to our complete listing of Reviews and AfterGlows as well as our rating system.

What Does AfterGlow Mean; How Does It Work?

With our reviews, we are committed to providing you with insight into movies without spoiling surprises and without giving you too much of the plot. We focus on the heart and soul of a film,  how it moves us emotionally, and what it can offer to help us view possibilities for dealing with the issues facing our life and times. Part of the emotional power of a story comes from how it unravels its mysteries. We never want to rob you of the innocence and wonder that is required to maximize a movie's impact. And thus our reviews are carefully scrutinized.

However, for us to share the full meaning of a movie, it is often useful to discuss the ending and surprises. This experience is akin to your joining us after we have all watched a film. We may not be able to share coffee or a meal with you, or to join you at the water cooler at the office, but we do offer our AfterGlow as the best Internet alternative we currently have.

AfterGlows are indicated at and may be linked to from the top of a review page next to our preciousness rating and from our All Reviews page. An AfterGlow page has a light blue background, not the light yellow background we use for our reviews. Part of an unwritten covenant we have with studios and film creators as well as with you our readers is to protect the surprises and ending of films. We want to make sure you always know that AfterGlows are spoilers and not intended for reading before you've experienced a film.
