If
the trailers led you to believe that Supernova is a new version
of Alien, you were as deceived as we were. Although not a SCI-FI
horror fest of the Alien caliber, this is an attention holding
and entertaining SCI-FI experience with great special effects created by
Digital Domain. We were both impressed with James Spader as an action
hero. The role suits him well indeed because he balances the shy
cuteness and menacing villainy from some of his earlier roles into a
convincing character who can woo the heroine (Angela Bassett as Chief
Medical Officer Kaela Evers)
and save the day with equal finesse.
In Supernova, the crew of the Medical Emergency Rescue Vessel
responds to a distress call from a distant galaxy. In the process, the
captain dies leaving Nick (James Spader) to save the damaged ship, pick
up the lone survivor from a deserted moon, and figure out how to get
them all home 11 minutes before the ship explodes. Complications deepen
when the intriguing survivor ends up being a little more than anyone can
handle.
OK, we grant that this isn’t a masterpiece action film with great
character development, but it is clean, good fun with interesting ideas
about the future of space exploration.
